Opportunity Calls in the Philippines

by Harry Osborne

In December of 2002, brother Ron Halbrook and I went to the Philippine Islands to conduct a series of lectures primarily for denominational preachers. Of the 80 souls baptized into Christ on that trip, about half were preachers from denominational groups. The Lord willing, brother Halbrook and I plan a follow-up trip towards the end of the year with more lectures of the same kind. We need to take advantage of the opportunities presented by this openness while it exists. Since such a large number have obeyed the gospel, they want friends, family and associates to hear the truth as well and they continue to open doors to even more who are willing to listen to the truth. I know of no other part of the world, with the possible exception of Latin America, so open to the truth.

This exciting and joyous spread of the gospel also presents some challenges that must be met if the work is to progress. The most pressing need is for men to be trained to preach in the new congregations being started across the country. This need has led to a request for me to help in a preacher training effort in the city of Tuguegarao on the northern island of Luzon. Brother Rody Gumpad is a faithful and experienced gospel preacher who has been very effective in spreading the gospel throughout that region. He has seen the need to train young men to preach and has planned a month-long program during June with all day classes throughout the month. Originally, Rody had asked Arnold Schnabel to help in this effort. However, when brother Gumpad discovered Arnold's doctrinal views and the action taken to oppose those views by this congregation, he began a discussion of the issues which ended in Arnold not taking part in the effort. This commendable action by Rody left him with a problem of classes being prepared, but having no one able to teach with him. Brother Gumpad asked for help from brother Halbrook and me in this effort. Ron agreed to help during the first half of June. After discussion among the elders, it was agreed for me to assist for the latter half of the program. I will be leaving on June 9 and return on June 28. Please pray for this effort.
